Tom Smith joins us to lead new Development Advisory service

News & Updates Tom Smith joins us to lead new Development Advisory service We’ve appointed Tom Smith MRICS as a Director, based in Manchester, to establish and lead its new Development Viability Advisory service throughout the UK, marking a significant expansion of the firm’s capabilities. Having previously held roles at CBRE, Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, and most recently leading AspinallVerdi’s Manchester office, Tom is a Chartered Surveyor specialising in development viability, delivery strategies and town centre regeneration. He brings a strong track record across both the public and private sectors, including senior roles advising on complex, large-scale schemes and supporting local authorities in bringing forward deliverable development. In this new role, Tom will lead the launch of our new national Development Advisory service line, focused on providing early-stage, commercially grounded advice to unlock challenging or stalled sites. The service will support clients across masterplanning, viability, delivery strategies, development partner procurement and funding, bridging the gap between strategic vision and genuine delivery. Tom commented: “Black Cat is an incredibly exciting and unique outfit which has built a very strong reputation in building consultancy. My focus will be on providing clear, commercially robust viability advice at the point where it has the most impact, helping clients navigate complexity and bring forward deliverable schemes.” The appointment comes at a time of increasing demand for integrated advice across viability, design and delivery, particularly for town centre regeneration and the work of Mayoral Development Corporations. Ben Golby, Black Cat founder, said: “We’ve built our reputation on providing practical, delivery-focused advice, and the addition of Development Advisory is a natural progression for the business. Tom has a strong track record of working on complex regeneration projects and understanding what it takes to move schemes forward, and his experience adds a new dimension to the support we can offer our clients.” Tom is already supporting Amstone Ventures, a developer with a proven track record in residential-led regeneration. Amstone delivered Clipper’s Quay and is currently progressing One Knightsbridge in Stockport, a key scheme within the town’s wider regeneration programme. Health centre refurb complete

News & Updates Health centre refurb complete! Black Cat was instructed by Medway Council and NewRiver REIT to act as Project Managers and Cost Consultants to deliver a 40,000 ft² Healthy Living Centre for the NHS to take occupation. This project has been undertaken in the existing shopping centre in Chatham, involving multiple public‑sector stakeholders, a complex commercial structure, and fixed NHS operational deadlines. We provided clear project leadership, governance and cost control, acting as the single point of coordination across the Council, Developer, NHS and Design Team. Risk, cost and change were controlled by a robust delivery framework, which enabled fast, confident decision-making on a live, high-profile regeneration scheme. The project was highly complex, aligned around a clear delivery strategy, with stakeholders fully engaged and risks tightly managed. The scheme was positioned for successful delivery, transforming under‑used retail space into a sustainable community health asset while supporting wider town‑centre regeneration. Mainly to celebrate the fact it was a Thursday… When we moved into our brilliant new space in St James Square back in December, the roof terrace may have felt slightly optimistic to some people. Inspiring the next generation of surveyors

News & Updates Inspiring the next germination of surveyors It was great to see the fresh-faced side of the team representing Black Cat at a Built Environment Careers Event in Burnley this week, with Design Technician James Green (centre), Ratings Surveyor Samuel Scarborough (right) and Graduate Surveyor Bradley McNally (left) all on hand to inspire the next generation. Speaking directly with over 40 Year 9 pupils, the team shared insight into the wide range of opportunities within building consultancy, from technical and surveying roles through to project delivery and specialist pathways. Sam said: “One of the most positive takeaways was seeing how engaged many of the students were, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in careers they may not have previously considered.” Having colleagues at different stages of their careers helped bring those pathways to life, showing there is more than one route into the profession. The team also discussed future work experience opportunities, with interest already shown for Year 10 placements next year. Thanks to Burnley College and Jo Norwood of Burnley Borough Council for organising such a brilliant event – a fantastic example of supporting future talent and giving young people a clearer view of the opportunities available in our industry.
